Grant Summary
The purpose of this exploratory grant is to explore media types to capture archival garments, fabrics and fabric related objects and move the course to a hybrid online format to enable a larger course enrollment and more in-depth object access. This will allow the PIs to leverage technology to expand and diversify the curriculum. Incorporating photo capture or photogrammetry strategies to develop a workflow for future 3D image capture of The Gregg’s collection for class use is a high priority for the PIs and this project.

Objective

  • Explore photo capture or photogrammetry strategies to capture objects relevant to class.
  • Assist PIs to move class to a hybrid model.
  • Develop a photo capture or photogrammetry pipeline. (Due to complexity of the process, documentation is currently more internal.)
  • Train PIs on the photo capture or photogrammetry pipeline. Through our exploration, a lot of information has been gathered through experience.
  • Through test shoots, we discovered how crucial lighting was to the image quality. Material attributes (shiny, transparent, sheer,etc…) can contribute to insufficient captures and/or increased post production resources
  • Processing images took a significant amount of time and was a result of enormous amounts and sizes of files gathered during capture.
  • Significant computer power was needed to process (optimize, stitch…) the amount of images/footage.
  • Expertise to process and touchup/rebuild aspects of the 3D models was higher than expected. Would benefit from hiring someone with this specific experience.
  • Many of these factors can limit an outside team’s ability to reproduce on their own.
